Learn Block Printing: A Beginner-Friendly Linocut Art Class

Discover the fun and accessible world of block printing (also known as linocut printing) in this beginner-friendly online art class. Block printing is a hands-on printmaking technique that lets you carve your own custom stamp or block, then print it onto paper, fabric, wood, and more. Each print you create will have its own unique handmade texture and character.

In this class, you'll learn how to:

  • Design your own print from scratch

  • Transfer your design onto a linoleum block

  • Use lino carving tools safely and effectively

  • Roll and apply water-based ink with a brayer

  • Print your design by hand using simple tools like a baren or wooden spoon

Whether you're brand new to block printing or looking to refine your skills, this class offers clear, step-by-step instruction to get you started confidently.

Who This Class Is For:
Perfect for artists, designers, crafters, and hobbyists of all skill levels. This is a block printing introduction, so no prior experience is necessary.

Tools & Supplies You’ll Need:
These basic tools will help you get started with your own home linocut studio:

  • Water-Based Ink (jar or tube; fabric or paper varieties available)

  • Lino Cutter Handle (holds multiple carving blades)

  • Brayer (to evenly roll ink onto your block)

Class Runtime: Approximately 47 Minutes

Please Note: This is a video class originally created for Skillshare.com. I understand that the Skillshare subscription model doesn’t work for everyone, so I’m now offering individual class purchases directly through my website. Because of this, you won’t be able to post projects, receive feedback, or participate in Skillshare contests, but you will get full access to all class videos and content.

While I’m proud of the material, this class was originally recorded in 2014. It’s in 1080p, with mostly modern-looking screen captures, but please note that some of the audio and video quality do not reflect the higher standards I produce today. You can preview this for yourself in the class trailer on YouTube, or check out the sample video linked below.

Since the content is still highly valuable, I’m offering this class at a deeply discounted rate:
